Data: 06.05.2025

The Blended Intensive Programme “PlasmaSurf Summer Course, Where Physics and Summer meet in the field of physics (Fields of Education – 533–physics)

Duration time – 4 July to 28 July of 2025

Physical Activity duration – 7 days (13 to 19 July)

Number of ECTS credits awarded – 3

City and country of the venue – Almada, Portugal

Methods and OutcomesPlasmaSurf is a summer school on plasma physics, intense lasers and nuclear fusion, tailored for BSc/MSc engineering and physics students. The physical lectures will be offered in self–contained modules, Monday through Saturday, including some practical lectures on remote laboratories, data analysis and computer science. Late afternoons are focused on joint/coaching activities, some involving the lectures too. The online activities are anchored on a remote laboratory. All the contents will be available from the first week, so that students can study and use remote–controlled laboratory at their own pace.

Priorities addressedIntroduction to Plasma Physics, Fundamentals of Plasma Diagnostics, Magnetic and inertial Nuclear Fusion, High power and ultrashort Lasers, Large international experiments involving Plasma Science

Objectives and description of the programmeThe regular course covers the basics of plasma physics, high power lasers and nuclear fusion, giving students the opportunity to get in touch with a wide range of interesting and cutting–edge topics.

Virtual Component Description – The course consists of two main sections related to intrusive and non–intrusive diagnostics in plasma physics, each one anchored on a remote laboratory and has an estimated duration of 20 hours, corresponding to 1.5 ECTS. After a brief introduction to the fundamentals of plasma physics and their diagnostics, students will be led to the FREE platform where to conduct and analyze data from (i) a Langmuir probe and (ii) an electromagnetic resonant cavity experiment.  Such experiments are fully automatized and control will belong to you through a suitable electronic control room. Emphasis will be given later to special techniques on data analysis.
